Volunteering
The Alliance also appreciates the support of volunteers. There are many areas you can volunteer and training will be provided.
You can do any of the following:
Shelter Supervisor:
- Operating the crisis line phones
- Answering the doors
- Managing shelter according to written house guidelines
- Interacting with residents
- Helping find items in the house
- Assist with children if needed
- Positive reinforcement of strengths to residents
- Being a good listener
- Receiving and recording donations
- Making out receipts
- Itemizing donations
- Sending out written thank you notes
- Sorting and putting away donations
Child Care:
- Work with children in shelter or under the direct supervision of the youth advocate during group activities
- Babysitting for young children
- Supervise play or craft activities
- Assisting staff or clients with child care or parenting techniques
Sexual Assault Volunteer Advocate:
- Sexual Assault Response Team (SART) volunteers may serve as victim advocates after special training. These advocates may be present with a victim at the hospital emergency room and during the investigation proceedings and court sessions, should a complaint be filed and legal charges be brought against the alleged offender. The intent is for the victim advocate to provide emotional support to the victim and act as an information source in decision-making.
Secretary/Clerical:
- Answering the office phone
- Newsletter-composition, typing, copying, addressing envelopes
- Correspondence-writing thank you notes, mailings
- Miscellaneous office-filing, organizing, researching, cleaning
House Maintenance (general upkeep of the shelter):
- Organizing shelves, sorting donations, general cleaning, home improvement projects, grocery shopping
Fundraising:
- Planning, organizing and executing fundraising projects
