History
The Alliance Against Violence and Abuse, Inc. has been operating since October 1982. The corporation changed from a membership basis to a directorship only with the directors having voting control. It started with sheltering victims and their dependent children in safe homes located in Delta County. The 24 hour crisis line was through a building in Gladstone or call-forwarding with the volunteers. The program rented its first three-bedroom home for a shelter in October 1993 after receiving a grant from the State of Michigan Department of Social Services. In May 1984 the program received the designation as the local council of the Children's Trust Fund of Michigan. Due to increasing demand the Shelter moved to a three story, seven-bedroom boarding house in Gladstone in March 1989 which was donated by Doug and Joyce Stewart. In 1992 they signed over the Irene Brown-Stewart house to the Alliance. In 1996 the shelter moved to its current location. The home is a two-story house with a full basement. The shelter also includes the Administration, Domestic Violence Advocates, Sexual Assault Advocate, Sexual Assault Therapist, STOP Program, and Youth Advocate. The Alliance has grown from its grass roots beginning. The agency provides service to over 500 families annually, the shelter provides over 2,600 bed nights annually. In addition to the safe shelter the Alliance has a 24-hour crisis line, advocacy, referral services, individual counseling, group counseling, court accompaniment, and assistance in obtaining Personal Protection Orders. The agency can also provide training to area organizations. Prevention through education is a primary goal.
