Protect Yourself

Protect Yourself:

When preparing to leave:

  • Open a savings account in your own name to establish, or increase your financial independence.
  • Pick a place you could go to stay if you needed to.
  • Leave some money, extra keys, copies of important papers and extra clothes with someone you trust.
  • Keep the shelter phone number close: 906-789-1166 or 1-800-682-1649.
  • Make sure you keep change for a payphone or a calling card with you at all times.
  • Review and revise your safety plan often in order to have the safest way to leave, because this can be a dangerous time.
  • Try to avoid arguments in bathrooms, kitchens, or anywhere near weapons
  • Practice how to get out of your home. Figure out which doors, windows, elevators or stairs work best.
  • Have a bag packed and ready. Keep it in a safe but accessible place, so you can leave quickly if you need to
  • Pick a neighbor to tell about the abuse. Ask that they call the police if they hear a disturbance from your home.
  • Pick a code word to use with your children, family, friends, and neighbors to let them know you need the police.
  • Have a plan of where to go if you ever need to leave, even if you think that you will never leave.
  • Use your judgment: if a situation is very dangerous, consider giving the abuser what he wants to keep yourself safe. You have the right to protect yourself.
  • If an argument seems unavoidable, try to have it in a room or area that has access to an exit.
  • If you think your computer is being monitored try to use a safer one. Such as a friends, at the library, or public computer.
  • If you have called the Alliance Against Violence and Abuse, Inc. follow it with another phone call somewhere else and delete the number.

Exercise your legal rights. You or anyone else experiencing domestic violence has the right to go to court and petition for an order of protection if you have been battered in one of the fifty states, Puerto Rico, or the District of Columbia. In most parts of the Country, you can also ask for custody of your children and child support at the same time. You should try to get a lawyer to represent you and protect all of your rights under the law.

Call your state and local coalition against domestic violence, a state or local crisis hotline, or the state or local bar association to learn more about where to find legal help.

Call 911 if you or some one you know is being battered by a spouse or intimate partner. Domestic Violence is a crime, not a “private family matter.”

Get help for your family so that the violence will stop. There are many services available to help families. Call 906-789-1166 or 1800-682-1649.
